(d) Herri MET DE BLES (1510-1550) The Conversion of Saint Paul Oak panel, two boards, reinforced (lower part added) H_32 cm - W_50.4 cm (old restorations, missing parts, and addition of a 10 cm strip in the lower part) Note: Another version of this composition by Herri Met de Bles is in the Allen Memorial Art Museum ( 45.8 × 59 cm, inventory 1995.13, Michel Weemans, Herri Met de Bles Les ruses du paysage au temps de Brueghel et d'Erasme, Paris, Hazan, 2013, pp. 241-247). In the background of our panel, we recognize Met de Bles' mastery of fantastic rocky panoramic landscapes and the vaporous transparency typical of Flemish atmospheric perspective. Following in the footsteps of Joachim Patinir, Met de Bles was one of the artists who established landscape as an independent art form for the first time. Met de Bles often called on history painters for the figures in the foreground. Here, they can be compared to the Master of Paul and Barnabas, himself influenced by Jan Sanders Van Hemessen and the Brunswick Monogrammist (Jan Van Amstel). We would like to thank Michel Weemans for confirming this attribution after direct examination of the work. (d)PLEASE NOTE : Lot visible by appointment with the Expert, Cabinet Turquin Paris 9ème - will also be available for collection from the Expert.
