Fénelon, (François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, dit) - Explication des maximes des Saints sur la vie intérieure. Paris, Aubouin, Emery, Clousier 1692. In-12° full contemporary calf, 18 ff, 272 pp, (1) pp. rare first edition, printed on strong paper, with the error "la perfections", p. 48. A famous work on the question of grace, which caused quite a stir when it first appeared. This book marks the beginning of the quarrel between Fénelon and Bossuet over quietism. Bossuet, after a bitter struggle, emerged victorious, and Fénelon's work was condemned. This brought disgrace to the Archbishop of Cambrai, who lost his title of preceptor to the children of France. Collector's stamp, good condition, large margins.
