Two molded beech armchairs with cabriolet backs, in an agitated form, the belt with triple molding resting on cambered legs, with two brackets at the back of the back, trace of logging at the belt of one of the armchairs; (small accidents; originally painted). Attributed to Étienne Michard or Jean-Baptiste Boulard. Louis XV period, circa 1770. H.90cm, L.64cm Restorations Provenance Delivered for the Duc de Choiseul-Stainville at the Château de Chanteloup, the Duc de Penthièvre at the Château de Chanteloup, private collection in the Tours region. This model of armchair was made around 1770 for the Duc de Choiseul at the Château de Chanteloup, indiscriminately by Michard or Boulard, both of whom were Choiseul's regular suppliers. Indisputable proof of origin lies in the addition of small brackets at the back of the seats to reinforce the structure, which are found exclusively on Chanteloup seats. In addition, a trace of wood burning on one of the two armchairs suggests that the Chanteloup fire mark from the time of the Duc de Penthièvre has been deliberately removed. In the absence of the original straps, no information is available to locate these seats inside the château. A pair of identical armchairs was sold at Sotheby's in Paris on June 28, 2023, lot 430.
