Large serpentine basin with jasper and chalcedony cabochons. Umbilicus decorated in relief with concentric circles; wing punctuated with six cabochons and molded border on inner and outer edges. Reverse side engraved with concentric circles. Germany, Saxony, circa 1600 H. 5.7 cm - D. 40.5 cm (some slight damage and minor restorations) A comparable basin with its ewer can be seen in the collections of Skokloster Castle in Sweden (inv. 3607 SKO, fig.), illustrated in E. M. Hoyer, Sächsischer Serpentin: Ein Stein und seine Verwendung, Leipzig, 1996, p. 130.
