Old label on back with handwritten inscription: Louis Joseph Jay / Born in Saint-Hilaire-de-la-Côte, Isère, / March 8, 1755 / Died in Vienne, Isère / July 7, 1836 / painter and teacher, / founder of the Musée de Grenoble.
Appointed Professor of Drawing at the École Centrale de l'Isère in 1796, Louis Joseph Jay was the first curator of the Musée de Grenoble, from its creation in 1798 until 1815. He was also one of the key figures behind the growth of Grenoble's artistic life in the 19th century.
