The swan was one of Empress Josephine's favorite decorative motifs, and quickly established itself as a major figure in the decorative arts during the first third of the 19th century. Frequently found on the armrests of seats or the headboards of beds, it also adorned bronze furnishings, sconces, pendulums and, as seen here, candelabras.
