Antoine LE MAISTRE (1608-1658) Jansenist lawyer and writer, retired to Port-Royal where he was Racine's teacher. L.A. (minute), [January 1, 1654], to Mère Marie Angélique des Anges, Abbess of Port-Royal; 3pages small in-4 with a few erasures and corrections. Beautiful letter from the Solitaire of Port-Royal, offering his aunt a collection of religious texts. Some of the Solitaries of his House of Port-Royal have appointed him to offer her "a small gift for the 1st day of this year", which Monseigneur le Duc de Luynes himself wished to take part in, as a token of their respect, affection and "the joy they have had of your election. [...] There is nothing but the Holy in this little book", excerpts from words of the Saints and Fathers: "you will see in it an image of what it has pleased God to do in your two Houses by the outpouring of His Holy Grace. Moreover, my dear Mother, since Saint Paul says that it is for people to lay up treasures for their children, and that [...] your children make you a small present, they also have the right to ask you in return, as they would their mother [...] for your holy prayers [...] so that you may draw down upon them the blessing of heaven through the charity of your maternal bowels. [...] This is what they have in their hearts, and for me, who has had the honor of knowing you for such a long time, this is what I have engraved in every part of my soul, not only as a Solitaire de PR but as the nephew of two Meres [...] who had so much joy in having you for their Mother"... Etc.
