Four acts on parchment, in French France, Saint-Gaudens, 1571-1575 Variable dimensions: approx. 575 x 405 mm These deeds, extracted from the registers of the court of Monsieur le sénéchal de Nébouzan, were issued by Savary d'Aure, seneschal of Nébouzan, baron de Larboust, seigneur de La Peyre. Nébouzan was a viscounty created in 1240 by detachment from Comminges. Saint-Gaudens was the "capital" of the former Viscounty of Nébouzan. Nébouzan had been a country of States since 1443. The first known mention of the "Etats de Nébouzan" dates back to 1448. They met at least once a year to decide on the levying of taille and other taxes requested by the king. They discussed the amount of these taxes, and the rebates to be obtained in the event of ravages due to war or poor harvests, distributed these taxes to each community, and ensured their collection. They also dealt with local affairs and appointed officials for the administration of the Nebouzan, and resisted royal attempts to abolish the States and replace them with Elections held by royal officials. Francis I tried in 1511 and again in 1544. Henri II tried again in 1552. Henri IV created Elections in 1603, but they had to be abolished in 1611. It wasn't until 1622 that Louis XIII succeeded in imposing them definitively, condemning the States to disappear as they no longer had any financial power.
