CAUX (Henry de). Catalog général des gentils-hommes de la province du Languedoc dont les titres de noblesse ont été remis devant Mr Bezons... lesquels titres de noblesse ont été confirmz par jugement souverain dudit sr. de Bezons... Pezenas, Jean martel, 1676. In-fol. posterior binding, full shagreened calf, ornate ribbed spine, burgundy morocco title-piece, red tr. 4 fnch. (faux-titre, title, epistle, avis au lect.), 78-92 pp. Ex-libris of Reboul. Handwritten note on flyleaf: "Ce livre devenu presque introuvable fait foi pour ce qui concerne les maintenues de noblesse des familles du Languedoc et leurs armes... (Reboul de la Juillères)". Handwritten ex-dono from Pascal to Maitre Forand. Uncovered spine ends, spine ends cracked, boards almost flyleafed, some minor internal marginal restoration, marginal damp marks, text still quite legible. First edition, divided into two parts, one on the generality of Toulouse, the other on that of Montpellier. This rare book provides a comprehensive picture of the Languedoc nobility at the time. It was reprinted in 1759 in Pièces fugitives pour servir à l'histoire de France by Aubais and Menard. It is also one of the first books printed in Pézenas, Hérault, whose printing works date back to around 1656. Roles drawn up for each diocese, sometimes accompanied by coats of arms. The work stops on page 92 (wrong ch. 82), in accordance with the pagination of the Bibliothèque Nationale's unique copy, numbered Lm2/63 (written bill in-fine from Mr. Reboul stating that he had consulted the copy at the Bibliothèque Nationale and noted the same pagination). (Saffroy, II-26642).
