ROCHEGROSSE (Georges) - THEODORE DE BANVILLE. LES PRINCESSES. Paris, Librairie des Amateurs, F. Ferroud 1904. In-4 , bound in half-cornered morocco, edged with gilt fillet, gilt head, smooth spine decorated with a mosaic of 3 green morocco bands at head and 5 at tail and 2 olive butterflies, placed on either side of the author and title. Cover and spine preserved, (rel. de Max Fronséque), bookplate of A. Villet. Rochegrosse's 24 compositions (including 3 in-text) were engraved by Decizy and printed by Ch. Whitman. Edition of 400 copies, this is one of 130 copies of the first edition on Japon or Arches vellum, like this one, N° 56 with the publisher's initials, including 3 states of the illustrations (final state in color, etching in black with remarks, pure etching with remarks). Attached: 1: LAS dated 7/04/1872 from Th. De Banville to Henry Houssaye, thanking him for an article. concerning him and congratulating him on a description of the coasts of Greece, (stamped part of envelope preserved) 2: LAS from Rochegrosse to Ferroud, about 2 watercolors commissioned and above all a new possibility of working with Decizy for the illustration of a new book - He returns from Algeria within 15 Days and will bring the drawings of Messaline and Hélène for "les Princesses" - 3.
