An ornate and gilt bronze ring with inscribed carnelian cabochon, Seljuk, 12th - 13th century
Flat ring band, 4 mm wide at the bottom, widening to 14 mm on both sides towards the center and rounding off towards the shoulder below the ring plate. A high cabochon (carnelian) with an engraved inscription in Arabic letters on the oval ring plate. The carnelian is framed by a high, conically tapering frame, which is decorated with incised tendrils with leaves in wave valleys and crests. Similar tendrils on the outside of the ring band. An appliqué of the same alloy attached to the ring band and frame on both sides by soldering. The lower part is profiled at the sides and decorated on the surface with vertical incisions, with two animal heads looking outwards at the top, the auricles, eyes and cleft of the mouth depicted by indentations. Impressively designed Islamic ring. The surface with partially rubbed gilding. Width 2.7 cm. Height 3.1 cm. Ring plate measures 2 x 2.6 cm.
