An eagle on a thunderbolt, a Roman bronze appliqué, 2nd - 3rd century A.D.
Small, but extremely high-quality bronze appliqué representing an eagle standing on a thunderbolt with a twisted surface relief. The eagle taking off in flight, looking forwards, its head slightly lowered, beating its outstretched wings. Anatomical details such as eyes, beak and plumage meticulously crafted in detail and precisely reworked and chased after the casting with an elaborate "finish". Hollow at the back. Iron oxide residue from a pin, which was used to fix the appliqué on a support, in the area of the neck and head. Matte, dark green patina. Intact. Delightful piece, attesting to provincial Roman craftsmanship. Height 4.5 cm. Width 6 cm.
Provenance: From a private South German collection. Inherited from the consignor's late grandfather, who died 30 years ago.
