The Dancing Faun of Pompeii, Foundry Hermann Gladenbeck, German, circa 1900
Cast bronze, full-length figure of a faun dancing naked and with upraised arms. Differing from the original from the faun's house in Pompeii due to the added fig leaf. Scratches in places on the back of the arms. Beautiful dark patina. Inscribed on the bronze plinth "Akt-Ges: H. Gladenbeck & Sohn" and marked with an illegibly inscribed lion's head stamp. Mounted on a green marble base. Height 38 cm.
Hermann Gladenbeck (1827 - 1918) was a prolific Berlin art foundryman of the 19th century. He received several large public commissions from city councils, including one for the statue of Immanuel Kant in Königsberg. His three sons in turn opened two further foundry businesses, giving the family name even greater reach and influence.
