A Congolese Nkisi power figure ("nail fetish" of the Bakongo), a Mozambican mask (Makonde) and a bronze bag (Benin)
Large, expressive power figure of a man made of wood. The body pierced several times with iron nails or plates, interspersed with ropes, remnants of leather, a net of woven grass and three small figures tied up. Remains of the paint. Nail eyes, pierced earlobes, engraved headdress. Rubbed surfaces, small defects in places. Height 95 cm. A painted wooden Makonde helmet mask with remnants of artificial hair. Pierced ears. Height 24 cm. Comes with a typically shaped, engraved Benin bronze bag decorated with sculptural figures. The leather strap is decorated all over with cowrie snails, the lower edge with blue glass bead chains with attached bells and engraved brass rings. Oxidized. Length 27 cm.
