A sabre à la Mameluke by court cutler Nohascheck, Mainz, circa 1870
Curved, very sharp wedge blade (repolished, a few small nicks), the maker's stamp "E & H.N" (E. & H. Neuhaus, Solingen) at the root, the fine etched signature "D A Nohascheck Gros Herz Hess Hof Schwerdtfeger Mainz" in front. Brass hilt richly decorated with leaf motifs in relief on both sides, the base chased (traces of gilding). Brass scabbard (dents, old repair in place) with two hump ring straps and two movable suspension rings. A stamp "4" appears at the mouth of the scabbard and the base of the blade. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age. Length 89.5 cm.
The Mainz citizen and master sword sweeper Adalbert Jacob Nohascheck, who ran the firm of Daniel Adalbert Nohascheck (name of an ancestor from Prague) in Mainz, was awarded the title of "Court Sword Sweeper" on 7 July 1863 at his request.
