A helmet for enlisted men of the Berlin Schutzmannschaft, circa 1900
Black lacquered leather body (partly cracked, small pressure marks on the visors) with nickel silver mountings. Screwed eagle emblem with embossed bandeau "1848 IN TREUE FEST 1898" and applied gilt mirror cipher "FWR IV" with crown. Cross blade with four round-headed screws and rigid tip with ball finial, nape rail with ventilation slider (jammed). Leather chinscales on button 91, lacquered iron cockades (national cockade missing, imperial cockade replaced). Well preserved brown leather flap lining (small cracks), in the body the maker's stamp "Lob Söhne Berlin" and the wearer's name "Redlich", in the neck "55 1/2". Slightly damaged in places, signs of age, double holes. Very rare.
