Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1881 - 1936) - a signed letter to Dr. Hugo Eckener, 1936
Sheet of stationery with blind-stamped "W" under royal crown, dated "June 4, 1936". Typewritten text, the Crown Prince thanks Hugo Eckener for his letter of "29.v.Mts.": "I am grateful for the intention to invite me on a trip to the U.S.A. and consider it a special honor. I would be very pleased to be able to take part in a voyage on the 'Hindenburg' [...] This year, however, I would not be able to take part in such a voyage". Handwritten signature "Wilhelm" in blue copying pen. Folded, perforated, missing parts, unfresh. Receipt stamp dated "June 8, 1936" and abbreviation in the upper margin, collector's name in pencil below the signature.
The airship LZ 129 "Hindenburg" completed its first test flight on March 4, 1936 and was delivered to the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei on March 19. In the 15 months between its commissioning and the tragic accident in Lakehurst in May 1937, the Hindenburg covered over 300,000 km on 63 voyages, traveling to the USA ten times and to Brazil seven times. The Crown Prince was invited by Dr. Eckener to the 6th North American voyage, which departed from Frankfurt to Lakehurst on August 5, 1936 and ended in Frankfurt on August 11. It is not known whether the Crown Prince, a daredevil at least as a rider, ever made a Zeppelin flight.
