Pierre CLOCHAR, Palais, maisons et vues d'Italie, mesurées et dessinées, Paris, L'Auteur, 1809. 1 vol. in-folio: 6p - 19p. and 102 pl. Some foxing, especially on certain pages of the text, but a fine copy. Bound in eggplant half-chagrin. A work in the tradition of the Grand Tour and Villa Medici, it is composed of 12 quires with engraved intermediate titles counting in the numbering. Clochar was a pupil of Percier, and his precise, lively pencil strokes are evident in the animated views presented. The work alternates between elevations, plans and views, with beautiful romantic settings using arcades to frame a view of a building. The book is complete with pages of descriptions of the plates, which are often missing, and which allow us to retrace the logic of Clochar's peregrinations through Italian cities during the First Empire. An unusual, high-quality work.
