Pierre Narcisse GUÉRIN (Paris, March 13, 1774 - Rome, 1833)
Study for a face of Morpheus or Cephalus
circa, 1810
Black stone and white highlights on gray laid paper
250 x 340 mm
Glued in full on a period mount
Empire period gilded wood frame
Note: The face, although inverted, is probably a preparatory study for the face of Cephalus (sketch in the Hermitage Museum and two versions in the Louvre and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow) and can also be compared to the figure of Morpheus.
