Portrait of Lancelot TURPIN de CRISSE (1782 - 1859)
Miniature signed lower left
8.5 x 8 cm
Provenance: Model's family, then by descent.
Note: Lancelot-Théodore Turpin de Crissé was a famous painter and collector, chamberlain and lover to Empress Josephine.
Bibliography: Considered one of the finest miniaturists of his generation, Augustin studied in Nancy with Jean-Baptiste Claudot and probably with Jean Girardet. Settling in Paris in 1780, he quickly made a name for himself in the field of miniature painting, thanks to the smoothness and meticulousness of his brushwork. He built up a large clientele among the nobility, the bourgeoisie and, later, the revolutionaries. An official painter to the imperial court, he was appointed peintre ordinaire du cabinet du roi Louis XVIII in 1814. He exhibited at the Salon from 1794 to 1831. Source : B.Pappe, Jean Baptiste Augustin 1759 - 1832, a new excellence in the art of miniature portraiture.
