Ercole de Maria (San Giovanni in Persiceto first half of the 17th century - c. 1640) Saint Joseph with Child. 73x62 cm. Oil on canvas.
Notes
Ercole de Maria grew up in the workshop of Giovan Francesco Gessi, from about 1630 he was among the closest and most trusted collaborators of Guido Reni, of whom he was an excellent copyist.
This is how Malvasia described Ercole: "he was not a great man, and by himself he knew little, but he copied well then the things of the latter (Guido Reni) in such a way that no one of that great school from those of the master knew how to distinguish them sometimes ..."
