France, 1st Empire (1804-1814). Officer's sword, without scabbard. Gilt bronze mounting, pommel with empanelled helmet seen from the front, chased joint arc on one side, with floral motifs. Wooden spindle with plain mother-of-pearl plates. Half-moon keyboard with central Athena profile surrounded by a laurel wreath, flanked on either side by winged sea horses. Curved acanthus leaf quillon. Scarlet wool tie. Three-edged blade, stained in places, one-third blued and gold, chased with floral motifs and trophies of arms. 91 cm (Blade 77 cm). (Missing mother-of-pearl plate on the spindle, chips on the remaining mother-of-pearl plate, small gap between the blade tang and the mount, in its uncovered condition, never before in collection. Fairly good condition.)
