AN INDIAN INCISED BRONZE SPICE AND PANDAN CONTAINER AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Karnataka or Tamil Nadu, Southern India, late 19th – early 20th century Cast in the drop-like shape typical of peepal leaves, resting on three sloping feet with lion paws surmounting minute circular wheels, with a lion handle on one side and a narrow, outward-opening, rectangular drawer divided internally into eight rounded compartments, the stepped and convex upper lid opening to a larger hollow compartment without internal division, the whole body and lid incised with overlapping horizontal decorative bands featuring floral motifs, vegetal meanderings and geometric fretwork, engraved on the base with two Telugu letters, possibly the maker’s or owner’s own initials, 15.2cm x 24.5cm.
