A CARVED AND PAINTED HARDWOOD VYALA-SHAPED ARCHITECTURAL SUPPORT AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Vijayanagara Empire, South India, ca. 17th - 18th century Of tall, narrow, rectangular shape, with a protruding tenon at the top, featuring a typical Vijayanagara-style yali or vyala (a mythical creature with a lion's body and the face and trunk of an elephant), the sinuous body carved in the round and showing residues of green, yellow, and red paint, wearing an elegant headdress and fully bejewelled, mounted on a dark wooden stand, 56cm high, 65cm high including the stand.
