FOUR THAI PAINTINGS OF LOCAL EPIC TALES AND LORES AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Thailand, South East Asia, 20th century Opaque pigments and gold on wove paper, the four vertical-format compositions typical of late 19th and 20th-century Thai paintings, depicting a number of characters from popular epics, possibly some from the Buddhist Jataka Tales, as well as local folklore narratives, comprising two paintings with an analogous subject with heavenly maidens (apsaras) accompanying a semi-divine ruler on a procession against a bright red ground, and two other paintings with a ruler in a chariot and setting peace to a crowd of fighters, each mounted, glazed, and framed, the largest 38cm x 32cm including the frame.
