LORD KRISHNA AND HIS BELOVED RADHA ENTHRONED Kangra or Guler, Pahari School, Himalayan Foothills, Northern India, ca. 1840 - 1860 Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, the vertical-format composition depicting a typical Indian enthronement scene with the beloved couple of Krishna and Radha seated on a golden lotus throne with a caparisoned parasol, Krishna wearing his traditional lotus crown with a peacock feather aigrette and Radha holding a lotus in her hand, flanked by two female attendants, one at the back whisking a peacock feather morchal (whisker) and holding a handkerchief, the latter in the front holding her hands together in a devotional respectful gesture, the foreground showcasing an array of gold and silver vessels on a vibrant floral floor spread, the scene located underneath a lobed arch decorated with lotus petals on a palatial terrace, set within typical concentric Kangra decorative borders with white flower sprays on cobalt blue ground, mounted, glazed and framed, 41.5cm x 36.5cm including the frame.
