A CARVED ROSEWOOD CHAIR WITH LORD SHIVA AND HIS CONSORT PARVATI (UMA) Possibly Tamil Nadu, Southern India, or Sri Lanka, 19th century The rosewood chair with a trapezoid seat fitted with a woven rattan and cane diamond-shaped grid, carved with slender, rectangular, faceted armrests supported by mythical lions reminiscent of temple yali figures, the backseat decorated with lush foliage and scrolling vegetal meanderings, in the middle two squares in-filled with Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati (Uma) seated cross-legged and holding one of their hands up in the abhaya mudra (fear-not gesture), flanked by two tall and curved palm leaves, the legs and sides carved with analogous vegetal motifs and floral trellis, 93.5cm x 61.3cm x 58cm.
