A DAY IN COURT: A LARGE KALIGHAT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN JUDGE DURING AN AUDIENCE Kalighat School, Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, Eastern India, ca. 1910 - 1930 Opaque pigments and ink on cream-coloured wove paper, the large vertical-format composition depicting an Indian court case of femicide assessed by a European judge seated in the centre of the scene, wearing a tall Western black top hat embroidered with his initials, flanked by two barristers, presumably representing respectively the defense and prosecution parties, in the foreground the severed body of a woman lying lifeless next to two men wearing a plain white and a red embroidered dhoti lower garments, the scene perhaps a special commission for a Western judge or an intentional form of modern 'critical art', mounted, glazed and framed, 52cm x 42cm including the frame.
