A LARGE QAJAR FIGURAL POTTERY TILE PANEL WITH THE PROPHET YUSUF AND HIS BROTHERS Tehran, Late Qajar Iran, ca. 1910 – 1925, attributed to 'Abd al-Razzaq The large panel of rectangular shape, made of ten individual square cuerda seca tiles, painted in turquoise, pink, cobalt blue, purple, dark brown, red, bright yellow, green, and black on a white ground, depicting the Prophet Yusuf (the Biblical Joseph), the eleventh son of Ya'qub and the main subject of the 12th sura in the Qur'an, standing next to a gentleman, possibly the merchant who is going to sell him in the slave market in Egypt, the youth accompanied by his eleven brothers, all clad in typical Qajar attires with brightly coloured long gowns, their turbans all folded in a slightly different fashion, Yusuf being the only character in the scene highlighted by an irradiating bright halo, set within concentric pink and turquoise borders, each tile 18.5cm x 19.3cm, the full panel 38.5cm x 95cm.
