λ A QAJAR STAINED WOOD AND IVORY MICRO-MOSAIC KHATAMKARI LIDDED BOX WITH NASTA'LIQ CALLIGRAPHY Qajar Iran, circa 1870 - 1890 Of rectangular shape, resting on a flat base, the exterior of the body and hinged lid profusely marquetry-inlaid in the typical Iranian khatamkari technique, showcasing a minute micro-mosaic of green-stained bone, ivory, brass, twisted wire, and wood tesserae of different colours laid out in geometric and stellar patterns, the central field of the lid decorated with a diamond-shaped cartouche with an infinite grid of hexagonal stars, the outer edges with lobed cartouches in-filled with elegant ivory-inlaid nasta'liq poetic verses against yellow-painted floral scrollwork on black ground, the plain interior painted in bold red and cobalt blue around the outer edges, 12.5cm x 33cm x 23.5cm. λ This item may require Export or CITES licences in order to leave the UK.
