A GEORGIAN DRINKING HORN (KHANTSI) WITH NIELLOED SILVER MOUNTS Possibly Tbilisi, Georgia, Central Asia, second half 19th century Of typical curved shape, the khantsi usually made of a ram or mountain goat horn, and fitted with nielloed silver mounts around the rim and the tapering, pointy end, the terminal designed as a duck head with a wide open beak, with a hanging chainlet attached to the rim and terminal once used for hanging the drinking horm on a belt and in recent times on the walls of Georgian abodes waiting to be used for supra wine toasting and drinking rituals, both mounts individually stamped '875' preceded by a man's head profile and 'AM4' (?), 6cm diam. and 27cm long. A very similar drinking horn attributed to the town of Tbilisi and dated ca. 1850, featuring an analogous duck head terminal, is part of The British Museum's permanent collection (inv. no. OA.9469).
