A pair of early 18th Century Indian campaign medals for the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842) and the Gwalior Campaign (1843) to a soldier of HMs 40th (2nd
Somersetshire) Regiment, consisting of: Candahar Ghuznee Cabul Medal 1842, named to: James Burnett HM 40 th Regiment. Fitted with replacement ‘German Silver’ claw and suspender;
Maharajpoor Star 1843, named on reverse to:Private James Burnett HM 40th Regiment, with Afghanistan Medal type steel straight bar suspender. Both medals have heavy contact marking (partly obscuring the naming on the first)
reflecting frequent wearing by the recipient, so only Good Fine (GF) condition. Nevertheless, a fine pair to one of HMs regiments involved in much heavy fighting.
