Benjamin Gerritsz CUYP (Dordrecht 1612 - 1652) Saint Paul on the road to Damascus Oak panel with parquet floor 65 x 89 cm Signed lower center B.G CUYP A painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp trained with his half-brother, Jacob Gerritsz, before developing his own style, close to the rembranesque movement. Initially a member of the Dordrecht gilde since 1631, Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp was reported to The Hague in 1643, before returning a year later to his native land, where he produced most of his work. Whatever his subjects, Cuyp generally integrated his figures into rustic interiors akin to those of the Van Ostades. A certain harmony emerges from our painting, thanks to the intense effects of golden light and the vitality of the brushstrokes, which go hand in hand with the brutality of the subject. Some of Benjamin Cuyp's other paintings also deal with St. Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus.
