Attribué à EUGÈNE DELACROIX
(Charenton, 1798-Paris, 1863)
Academic study after the model known as "the Polish".
Canvas
72 x 59 cm
The model shown is a famous model who posed in Pierre-Narcisse Guérin's studio in 1815/1820. Nicknamed "the Pole", he worked for Gros, Géricault and Delacroix, in the painting now conserved at Place Furstenberg (see L. Rossi Bortolatto, Tout l'œuvre peint de Delacroix, Paris, 1975, no. 21, reproduced).
X-rays have revealed an underlying composition, and the painting technique, in Davidian rubbing, is very similar to the portrait of Mademoiselle Rose in the Louvre (see opus quoted above, no. 36, reproduced).
