Eduard WIIRALT is Estonia's leading master
Estonian printmaker. Having moved to Paris
1925, his work is strongly influenced by
expressionism, and influenced by Jérôme
BOSCH and James ENSOR. In 1931, he was invited by
mistress and patron Nelly STULZ to Strasbourg.
There he began Cabaret, one of his most important works
one of his most important works, along with L'Enfer, of which it is perhaps the
counterpart. These 2 masterpieces reflect
his hallucinations and grotesque proportions
characteristic of Expressionism in the interwar period.
