The equestrian group is a reduction of the statue of Louis XIV in front of the Château de Versailles, Place d'Armes.
Pierre Cartellier was commissioned to create the sculpture in 1816. After the sculptor's violent death in 1831, his son-in-law Louis-Messidor Petitot completed the commission, and the sculpture was cast by Crozatier and erected in 1836.
