A French plaster bust depicting Jean Rotrou (1609-1650), after Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792), 20th century
One of Caffieri's finest busts is of the French poet and tragedian Jean Rotrou (1609-1650). In the case of Rotrou's bust, he worked from a painted portrait.
The bust here by Caffieri, with its boldly coiffed hair, bare throat and magisterial coat, seems to echo the sweeping moustaches.
