Southern Netherlands, Brabant school circa 1500
Composite scene of the Descent from the Cross
Three rearranged carved oak groups on a modern wooden background: Pontius Pilate washing his hands, the Descent from the Cross and an Executioner on a ladder (minor accidents)
62.8 x 63 x 10 cm
This composite panel features figures from various scenes depicting episodes from the Passion of Christ, a favorite subject of Brabant workshops producing large-scale altarpieces in the late medieval period. The figure on the left is Pilate washing his hands, whose model was disseminated by the engravings of the famous artist Martin Schongauer (Jesus Christ before Pilate, circa 1480, burin engraving, Musée d'Unterlinden, Colmar) and was taken up by various European sculptors' workshops in the late 15th century (cf. Jesus before Pilate, 15th century, wooden altarpiece panel, Musée barrois, Bar-le-Duc).
