Mémoires du baron de Tott, sur les Turcs et les Tartares. A Amsterdam (Paris), 1784. 4 parts in 2 vols. in-8° full contemporary basane, smooth spines decorated, red edges. Ex-libris. Baron François de Tott (1733-1793) remained Consul in the Crimea for 2 years, then moved to Constantinople, where he worked to maintain the Turkish struggle against the invading Russians. In 1770, he armed the capital and the Dardanelles, saving the Empire by forcing the Russian fleet to turn back. He then had the Dardanelles castles built. He was well versed in the languages and affairs of the Levant, and his work provides accurate insights into Muslim politics and private life.
