Egypt, circa 12th century This cotton and silk canvas features two opposing friezes on a green background, bearing an anonymous, illegible inscription in white, with red fleurons and surrounded by Greek ribbons. Dim. 64.5 x 21 cm An Ayyubid tiraz textile fragment, Egypt, 12th century These textiles, woven in workshops at the Fatimid court, generally bore the name of the caliph and eulogies. Another fragment with a similar inscription is published by R. Pfister, Toiles à inscriptions abbassides et fatimides, in Bulletin d'Études Orientales, Institut français de Damas, Tome XI, 1944-46, no. 66.
