An earthenware carved and painted bowl with calligraphy and a blazon, Egypt, Mamluk period, 14th century
Mamluk emblems (called rank in Arabic, pl. runūk) exploit a rich visual vocabulary. Some of them combined various signs, symbolizing an attachment to an emir or sultan. The three-banded coat of arms is a very rare symbol from the first decades of the Mamluk sultanate. Its meaning refers to the emblem of the barīdī, the horseman.
