Engraved brass. 180mm radius We would like to thank Mr Anthony Turner, CNES Expert, for his collaboration. Son of 'Alî Marsil al-Andalus, brother of Muhammad Ibn 'Alî, 'Ahmad was born into a family versed in the manufacture of astronomical tools. The activity of the Marsîl al-Andalus family, who probably worked in Morocco in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, testifies to the continuing interest in astronomy and the technical skills of the Maghrebians around 1800. This modern copy is probably based on an astrolabe-quadrant made for Muhammad Ibn al-Haj 'Abd al-Salam al-Salâwî in Rabat, preserved in the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, inv. no. 54673, date hegira 1219/1804 CE).
