Gouache on paper, done in a realistic style. The maharaja is dressed in Anglo-Indian garb. He is seated on a richly caparisoned chestnut stallion, the saddle heavily embroidered with gold.

Ram Singh II began his reign at birth, under his mother's regency, since his father had died a few months earlier. Nicknamed "Ram the Great" or "Ram the Peaceful", he is renowned for having made peace with all his kingdom's enemies. He was also the 1st Maharaja of Jaipur to visit England, where he met Queen Victoria in 1866.
