Miniature painted in gouache mounted on an album page with six "nasta'liq" cartouches. The scene depicts an elephant mounted by a mahout holding an ankus, a servant and a monarch, probably Jahangir, using the barrel of his rifle to fend off a lion clutching the palanquin on the elephant's back. The mahout and another servant turn around in horror.
Miniature size: 25 x 18.5 cm
Emperor Jahangir, Great Mughal of India (1605-1628) was a passionate hunter. He loved to be depicted in his hunting exploits for lions, tigers and wild elephants.
