India, Rajasthan, Nathdwara, early 20th century
Cotton canvas painted with opaque polychrome pigments.
Size: 177 x 113 cm
Against a backdrop of a lush garden animated by peacocks, the panel features, in a balanced composition, Krishna in the form of the deity Sri Nathiji, surrounded by four rounds of gopis, dancers and musicians, accompanied by Krishna's illusory manifestations and four celestial chariots known as "vimana". The dance symbolizes union.
