Tie pin consisting of a coin featuring the profile of Pope Pius IX, and the inscription "Pie IX PON. MAX A XXII". Pope Pius IX was elected pope in 1846 and died in 1878 (wear).
NB: the fashion for coins to adorn hatpins coincided with the disaffection for cameos, around the 1880s.
