Nicolas Bertin is credited with a subject illustrating, as here, a fable by La Fontaine: L'ours et l'amateur de jardins, sold at the Touard auction in Paris on February 22, 1779.

A woman painter by the name of François Bertin was admitted to the Académie de Saint - Luc in 1748 (Cf. E. Bénézit, vol.12, p. 220 - Gründ 1999).
