AEROPHILATELIE - COURIER ACCIDENTE HYDRAVION COURTIER - Extreme-Orient line Great Britain.
On landing at PHALERON BAY in Greece on October 1, 1937, the aircraft piloted by Captain POOLE collided violently with the sea. With its fuselage damaged, it sank in a matter of minutes. Three passengers drowned, while the mail, damaged by the sea, was recovered. A different mark was affixed by the authorities depending on the country of destination:
-LETTER from Alexandria Egypt to Paris. Departure stamp Alexandria September 31, 1937. Stamps detached by the sea.
On back: CAD arrival Paris October 6 + French Post repair strips + large French Post justification claw, 5 lines in violet: "SERVICE POSTAL FRANCAIS correspondance retardée par suite du naufrage d'un avion. Reconstituted by the French service NE PAS TAXER".
