CHATEAUBRIAND François René de (1768-1848)
L.S. "Chateaubriand" to the poet Charles Laurent, Paris, January 17, 1833. 1p ½. in-8. Address and postmarks.
Beautiful letter on religion and poetry. Chateaubriand congratulates him "[] on having dedicated your first songs to Religion; the true source of poetry, the more neglected it is these days, the more treasures it has to lavish on those who devote themselves to its altars.
Some of the old Voltairians who hang around in this century, and who in their ignorance haven't the slightest idea of the current renewal of Christianity through history and philosophy, are still at the pleasant antics of my cousin Vadé (Voltaire's pseudonym); our educated and serious youth is no longer there; it understands that the long Christian civilization, substituted for Greek and Roman civilization, has changed the face of the world, and that for this reason alone, it is still well worth studying: the disdain of these incredulous wigs is truly pleasing []".
Letter written by his secretary Hyacinthe Pilorge.
