Marbled calf, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding). Cohen, I, 531-532. Second edition in French, after that of 1733, dedicated, like the first, to Prince Philippe-Charles, Archbishop of Mainz. It is adorned with a frontispiece, a title vignette, a band bearing the arms of the dedicatee and 60 plates, all engraved by or under the direction of Bernard Picart (1673-1733). These plates feature two engravings, the first depicting a scene from an ancient fable, captioned in French, English, German and Dutch, the second framing this scene. According to Cohen, these engravings are slightly modified copies by Diepenbecke, executed for the 1655 Temple des Muses, with text by Michel de Marolles. Binding skilfully restored, some spotting. Soiling to false title. Frontispiece slightly cut by binder. Missing tear and slight damage to text at top of folio Bb2. Worm damage in the inner margin of several leaves at the end of the book.
